SONATA @ the KuVS Summer School 2016 on SDN/NFV from 20 to 23 June 2016
June 20, 2016 - June 23, 2016
Each year, the KuVS group organizes a Summer School on a hot topic of networking and distributed systems. The main target audience are first-year PhD students as well as people from industry.
The topic for the 2016 edition is Software-Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization, taking place in the sailing school of Deutsche Hochseesportverband HANSA (DHH) the week of June 20th. The goal of this summer school to provide a comprehensive survey of the key skills necessary to successfully undertake independent research in SDN or NFV, covering both theoretical backgrounds as well as practical aspects.
To this end, a program was created that rests on three main pillars:
– Presentations from leading experts with discussions and Q&A
– Hands-on work with actual frameworks
– Presentations by participants on their incipient or ongoing research work, along with feedbacks from other participants and experts.
The program will also encompass a one-day team building event to foster networking among the participants. Registration is now open, and details can be found at the University of Paderborn’s website here.
About SONATA 5G PPP project
Virtualisation and software networks are a major disruptive technology for communications networks, enabling services to be deployed as software functions running directly in the network on commodity hardware. However, deploying the more complex user-facing applications and services envisioned for 5G networks presents significant technological challenges for development and deployment. SONATA addresses both issues
For service development, SONATA provides service patterns and description techniques for composed services. A customised SDK is developed to boost the efficiency of developers of network functions and composed services, by integrating catalogue access, editing, debugging, and monitoring analysis tools with service packaging for shipment to an operator. For deployment, SONATA provides a novel service platform to manage service execution. The platform complements the SDK with functionality to validate service packages. Moreover, it improves on existing platforms by providing a flexible and extensible orchestration framework based on a plugin architecture. Thanks to SONATA’s platform service developers can provide custom algorithms to steer the orchestration of their services: for continuous placement, scaling, life-cycle management and contextualization of services. These algorithms are overseen by executives in the service platform, ensuring trust and resolving any conflict between services.
About KuVS (Kommunikation und Verteile Systeme)
KuVS or Communication and Distributed Systems is a technical committee of the German Society for Computer Science (Gesellschaft für Informatik) and the VDE’s Information Society (Informationstechnischen Gesellschaft des VDE). It gathers interest in communication and distributed systems from both industry and academia and provides services to the community as well as represents these topics towards the general public.
