Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) and the 5G Infrastructure Association (5G IA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to foster collaboration on Research, Standards, Regulations and Policies over the next 3 years

Brussels, May 2nd, 2018 – Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India, India’s Telecom SDO and 5G Infrastructure Association, representing the European industry in the 5G-PPP Research Programme, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to foster collaboration on 5G development.

This MoU confirms the intention of TSDSI and 5G IA to explore collaboration opportunities in areas of mutual interests in the field of 5G communication systems and networks, including:

  • Vision and Requirements of 5G communication systems and networks;
  • Technology exploitation and dissemination to ensure awareness, understanding and involvement and finally adoption;
  • Discussions on basic system concepts and architecture;
  • Support for global regulatory process in identification of Frequency bands and spectrum arrangement for 5G technologies.
  • Identification of common interests, building of consensus and collaboration to support development of globally harmonised standards
  • Promoting cooperation among European and Indian R&D organizations and industries
  • Use cases of 5G, including mMTC (massive Machine Type Communications), eMBB (enhanced Mobile Broadband) and URLLC (Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications), aligned to applications such as Smart Cities, Mission Critical IoT, Broadband, Consumer-centric 5G, Industry 4.0 and other topics

The envisaged means of exploring these collaboration opportunities may include, but are not limited to, the exchanges of information /documents, meetings, workshops and other joint initiatives with mutual agreement.

TSDSI and 5G IA will seek to develop and deploy mechanisms to promote 5G-related R&D initiatives based on the aligned opportunities identified by both parties.

The first bilateral meeting between the two sides was held in Beijing on Apr 12, 2018, on the side-lines of the 3GPP PCG/OP meetings. Items like conducting a joint workshop, setting up of test beds and specific topics of mutual interest were discussed at the meeting.

Prof. Kiran Kuchi, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, and Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, 5G Infrastructure Association, at the 3GPP PCG/OP meeting on 12th April 2018

Welcoming the MoU, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Chairman of Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India said “India is driving development and standardization of 5G technologies to address the Rural-Urban digital divide. This MoU is expected to promote closer alignment between Indian and European activities in this space”

Dr Colin Wilcock, Chairman of the Board of the 5G Infrastructure Association, said: “While European funded research is critical for delivering a 5G global standard covering all relevant use cases, International collaboration, as promoted by 5G IA is instrumental for global harmonization and to promote a global ecosystem for 5G. It is in this context that the MoU signed with TSDSI is important.”

Ms Pamela Kumar, Director General, Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India emphasised: “The MoU is expected to be used to reflect India’s specific requirements and technology solutions in global conversations. It is intended to deepen collaboration between Indian and European entities. The focus will be on 5G technology trials, test beds and development of use cases across different verticals leveraging 5G technologies.”

Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, Secretary General of the 5G Infrastructure Association, highlighted: “We are delighted that this MoU might be signed before the 3GPP-PCG/OP April 2018 meetings, and it joins similar agreements already signed with China, South-Korea, Japan, North America and Brazil promoting the global discussion on 5G”. “We are keen to engage a concrete and fruitful cooperation with TSDSI in view of mutual benefits for our both important markets.”
