5G PPP projects @IEEE PIMRC 2016 (4-7 September – Valencia, Spain)

September 4, 2016 - September 7, 2016

The 27th IEEE PIMRC will be held in Valencia (Spain) from 4th to 7th September 2016. It will cover wide range of topics in wireless communications, networks, services, and applications by hosting 3 Keynote Speakers and Main Technical sessions under 4 Tracks, 6 Tutorials and 8 Workshops. Details on the conference can be found there.

5G PPP projects will present first outputs. METIS-II is organising the panel 1 “What is relevant research for 5G Advanced?”. CHARISMA is organising the “5G strengthening business and social development: barriers and drivers” workshop on September 4th, 2016. mmMAGIC will present papers.

Panel 1 organiser: Dr. Olav Queseth (METIS-II/Ericsson, Stockholm, Sweden)
Abstract: At the time of PIMRC the standardisation of 5G has been running for some time and the first deployments are only one and a half year into the future. What is clear though is that this first wave will be followed by a number of innovations and improvements. At this time it is important to start thinking about initiating research on topics that will be important in the future but at the moment may have taken a back seat to the standardisation efforts. The panel will provide the view of a number of industry and academic leaders on the topics that will shape the development of 5G advanced and make a guess at important emerging fields.

CHARISMA Workshop organiser: Ioannis Neokosmidis
Abstract: The CHARISMA project will showcase its work and discuss business and regulatory issues of 5G networking. The workshop has been endorsed by the IEEE 5G Mobile Wireless Internet Emerging Technologies Subcommittee (IEEE 5G TsC).

mmMAGIC will present two papers: “E-band Millimiter Wave Indoor Channel Characterization” and “On the Performance of Millimeter Wave-based RF-FSO Links with HARQ Feedback”.

About CHARISMA
CHARISMA proposes an intelligent hierarchical routing and paravirtualised architecture that unites two important concepts: devolved offload with shortest path nearest to end-users and an end-to-end security service chain via virtualized open access physical layer security (PLS). The CHARISMA architecture meets the goals of low-latency (<1ms) and security required for future converged wireless/wireline advanced 5G networking. This provides a cloud infrastructure platform with increased spectral and energy efficiency and enhanced performance targeting the identified needs for 1000-fold increased mobile data volume, 10-100 times higher data rates, 10-100 times more connected devices and 5x reduced latency. The CHARISMA approach will benefit user experiences with ground-breaking low-latency services, high-bandwidth, and mobile cloud resilient network security.

About METIS-II
Key objectives of METIS-II are to develop the overall 5G radio access network design and to provide the technical enablers needed for an efficient integration and use of the various 5G technologies and components currently developed. The innovation pillars that will allow METIS-II to achieve this goal are

  • a holistic spectrum management architecture addressing the spectrum crunch,
  • an air interface harmonisation framework enabling an efficient integration of new and legacy air interfaces,
  • an agile Resource Management (RM) framework providing the dynamics required to efficiently adapt the integrated 5G air interfaces and radio concepts to the varying traffic demand and service requirements,
  • a cross-layer and cross-air-interface system access and mobility framework ensuring an ubiquitous access continuum,
  • and a common control and user plane framework providing the means for an efficient support of the broad versatility of services expected for 5G as well as a future-proof and cost-efficient implementation of the 5G integration.

About mmMAGIC
The mmMAGIC (Millimetre-Wave Based Mobile Radio Access Network for Fifth Generation Integrated Communications) project will develop and design new concepts for mobile radio access technology (RAT) for mm-wave band deployment. This is envisaged as a key component in the 5G multi-RAT ecosystem and will be used as a foundation for global standardization. The project will thus enable ultrafast mobile broadband services for mobile users, supporting UHD/3D streaming, immersive applications and ultra-responsive cloud services.
